Heat resistant materials are defined as substances that have the ability to protect other substances from damage resulting from high temperatures. They are used to protect people and equipment from heat related damage, in some cases heat resistant materials save lives. Places where you may have seen heat resistant materials is on the inside of ovens and cars.
Today, there are many uses for heat resistant materials and they are widely used in various industries, including both commercial and residential sectors. Below is a list of the four basic heat resistant materials and their corresponding uses.
1. Heat Resistant Sealants
Sealants that are resistant to heat are used to close gaps between machines or other devices that are known to create a lot of heat. The sealants help the machines or devices resist the heat that is created enabling them to operate better and mitigate damage. This form of heat resistant material has the added benefit of being able to absorb shocks and vibrations which is another form of common damage.
Heat resistant sealants come in two forms: cement and liquid foam. Cement is generally used to seal rough surfaces whereas liquid foam is used to close small gaps, such as with threading and machine connections. Heat resistant sealants can withstand heat that is between 157 and 816 degrees Celsius.
Typically, this heat resistant material is ideal for precise and durable sealing needs. Industries that make ample use of this heat resistant material include power generation, oil and automotive sectors.
2. Heat Resistant Tape
This type of heat resistant material is used when regular tape won’t work because of the high heat and pressure involved. Heat resistant tape isn’t prone to shrinking or tension, in addition to being resistant to salt water, chlorine and perspiration. The durability of heat resistant tape is immense, the tape can withstand heat up to 1650 degrees Celsius.
You can purchase heat resistant tape with a diverse range of characteristics. Width, length, thickness and colour are all custom features to heat resistant tape that can be purchased to suit your needs.
3. Fire Blankets
Blankets that are resistant to fire are quite commonly known and easiest to find, you may even have one in your house, office or apartment building. Heat resistant blankets can quickly put out a growing fire and save people in the event of an emergency. They are designed to cut off the oxygen feeding a fire, thereby eliminating the fire.
Fire blankets come in various sizes, usually if blankets are used for personal or residential purposes they are small in size. On the other hand, blankets used for industrial purposes are much larger in size. Regardless of the intended use, blankets are folded and stored until they need to be rapidly pulled out in an emergency situation.
Fire blankets are merely woven fire resistant materials that create a sheet large enough for residential and industrial uses. Sometimes fire blankets are coated with flame retardant fluid to make them even better for putting out fires.
4. Fire Sleeve
Mainly used in the aerospace and industrial industries, fire sleeves coat other items to protect them from heat, water, oil, flame and adhesives. Fire sleeves can tolerate heat up to 540 degrees Celsius.
Because fire sleeves are used to coat a wide variety of items, there are many sizes, dimensions and types available on the market. Common uses for fire sleeves is coating for cables, wires, and industrial or hydraulic hoses. Compared to other heat resistant materials, fire sleeves are relatively cost effective which is why you typically find fire sleeves in industrial facilities.
